The culmination of the Oak Ridge research over 1970-76 resulted in an MSR design that would use LiF-BeF 2-ThF 4-UF 4 (72:16:12:0.4) as primary coolant with fuel. A total of 10,000 operating hours was logged. This programme prepared the way for building a MSR breeder utilizing thorium, which would operate in the thermal (slow) neutron spectrum. A second campaign (1968-69) used U-233 fuel which was then available, making MSRE the first reactor to use U-233, though it was imported and not bred in the reactor. The original objectives of the MSRE to demonstrate the concept as a simple reliable reactor were achieved by March 1965, and the U-235 campaign concluded. * Fuel salt melting point 434☌, coolant salt melting point 455☌. The coolant salt in a secondary circuit was eutectic lithium + beryllium fluoride (FLiBe).* There was no breeding blanket, this being omitted for simplicity in favour of neutron measurements. The fuel comprised about one percent of the fluid.* ![]() In the first campaign (1965-68), uranium-235 tetrafluoride (UF 4) enriched to 33% was dissolved in molten lithium, beryllium and zirconium fluorides at 600-650☌ which flowed through a graphite moderator at ambient pressure. It was the primary back-up option for the fast breeder reactor (cooled by liquid metal) and the small prototype 8 MWt Molten Salt Reactor Experiment (MSRE) operated at Oak Ridge over four years to 1969 (the MSR programme ran 1957-1976). * It had primary coolant of NaF-ZrF 4 with UF 4 and secondary coolant of NaK at 880☌, to produce 60 MWt.ĭuring the 1960s, the USA developed the molten salt breeder reactor concept at the ORNL. The US MSR programme originated in the Aircraft Reactor Experiment* at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Tennessee (built as part of the wartime Manhattan Project). Graphite as moderator is chemically compatible with the fluoride salts. Intermediate designs and the AHTR have fuel particles in solid graphite and have less potential for thorium use. Thorium, uranium, and plutonium all form suitable fluoride salts that readily dissolve in the LiF-BeF 2 (FLiBe) mixture, and thorium and uranium can be easily separated from one another in fluoride form. Batch reprocessing is likely in the short term, and fuel life is quoted at 4-7 years, with high burn-up. The main MSR concept is to have the fuel dissolved in the coolant as fuel salt, and ultimately to reprocess that online. The salts concerned as primary coolant, mostly lithium-beryllium fluoride and lithium fluoride, remain liquid without pressurization from about 500☌ up to about 1400☌, in marked contrast to a PWR which operates at about 315☌ under 150 atmospheres pressure. There are a number of different MSR design concepts, and a number of interesting challenges in the commercialisation of many, especially with thorium. Much of the interest today in reviving the MSR concept relates to using thorium (to breed fissile uranium-233), where an initial source of fissile material such as plutonium-239 needs to be provided. MSRs may operate with epithermal or fast neutron spectrums, and with a variety of fuels. However, the concept is not new, as outlined below. But extending the concept to dissolving the fissile and fertile fuel in the salt certainly represents a leap in lateral thinking relative to nearly every reactor operated so far. This itself is not a radical departure when the fuel is solid and fixed. Molten salt reactors (MSRs) use molten fluoride salts as primary coolant, at low pressure. Some have solid fuel similar to HTR fuel, others have fuel dissolved in the molten salt coolant.Global research is currently led by China.A variety of designs is being developed, some as fast neutron types. They are seen as a promising technology today principally as a thorium fuel cycle prospect or for using spent LWR fuel. ![]() ![]()

![]() Interestingly, the press releases from both H&M and Versace emphasise that the range will be a celebration of iconic Versace moments, rather than a diffusion-level version of the current collection. In 2009, when Matthew Williamson designed a range for H&M, he worried about the impact on sales at his boutique – would women still shop there, when they could get the name for a tenth of the price half a mile away? As it turned out, his main line sales figures for the period when the H&M collection was on sale were higher, not lower, than usual. Her change of heart reflects, in part, the astonishing success of high-street collaborations with designers, which have proved to be – when done well – a winner for both parties. I think to put the Versace line in H&M would confuse the brand." She has in the past been hostile to the concept of high-street collaborations – just three years ago, she was quoted as saying: "I work very hard to put the Versace line in the luxury section. It is as if she is finally ready to take the Versace brand to the masses. But still, I suspect Donatella's motivation is more about the brand than about her own ego. Is it just me, or does Gaga bears a strong physical resemblance to a young Donatella, as seen in family photos when she was still only known as Gianni's younger sister? Plenty of fodder for amateur psychologists there. ![]() Donatella, in return, has lavished the singer with praise – and one-off Versace archive pieces that guarantee airtime in the fashion blogosphere. She wore a Versace LBD on the cover of the US edition of Harpers Bazaar last month, and has shown a particular fondness for the Miami-bright scarf prints, on leggings and silk blouses. According to fashion insiders, Donatella wrote Gaga a letter, telling her that she believed her brother Gianni would have wanted to dress her and offering to open the archives, and Gaga responded enthusiastically, wearing vintage Versace at high-profile appearances. By forging a connection with Gaga, Donatella has found a way to make that heart beat again. Medusa heads, black leather, a very Italian embrace of sunshine colours, a stiletto with everything and always, always make the boobs look good: that's what Versace is, and will always be. The heart of the Versace brand will always be the prowling, tigerish sex appeal that the label stood for in the 80s. ![]() The significance of the Lady Gaga connection is not to be underestimated: after all, last September when the New York Times ran an article about the power struggles, feuds and mind games that determine the seating arrangements at catwalk shows, one editor, Dan Peres of Details, nailed the key issue: "I want to see who gets the seat next to Lady Gaga." Right now, that seat is occupied by Donatella Versace, and the momentum that Gaga has in pop culture makes that a powerful place to be. The label has not been hotter since the salad days of supermodels in sweet-shop brights on the catwalk and Liz Hurley in safety pins on the red carpet. In the new video for Edge of Glory, Lady Gaga is wearing a slashed, medusa-spiked corset from Gianni Versace's last collection Donatella took a catwalk bow after this week's Versace menswear show in Milan in a skintight, knee-length, studded-and-zipped dress – which, she revealed the following morning, was an early sample from Versace for H&M, which will bring the Versace look to the high street, when it hits stores in November this year. The two headline fashion images of this week are both of glamorous blondes in skintight, gold-studded, stretch black Versace leather. Philanthropies, including CIFF and Oak Foundation, have also allocated finance for addressing loss and damage. It was suggested that addressing loss and damage can be integrated into businesses’ climate risk management plans and corporate social responsibility strategies. They can act now to make their supply chains and business models climate resilient, supporting producers, processors, manufacturers and traders at all levels of the value chain to cope with and recover from climate shocks. Some participants noted that private enterprises, from transnationals to small businesses, are already experiencing the negative impacts of climate change. It was suggested that private sector finance could be mobilised by making the case that, if unaddressed, loss and damage will erode productivity, market access and long-term profit rates. Finally, which actors are ‘agents of change’ in this area was considered. They discussed how far current options address the urgency and scale required for loss and damage action, and what role the innovative approaches might play in shifting the financial burden away from the most vulnerable and most impacted. In this session participants were presented with case studies of novel and innovative sources of funding, and asked to consider how far these addressed the limitations identified among the existing mechanisms considered in the ‘Mobilising Finance: lessons learned’ session. Given the current lack of public finance available to support action to address loss and damage, there is an urgent need to develop and deploy innovative sources and flows of finance to fill this funding gap in ways that are appropriate, effective and just.
